- Yasujiro Ozu, a film director was famous for not complimenting actors and actresses, however he has stated Setsuko as the best actress in the country.
- Setsuko’s sister married to a film director, Hisatora Kumagai, who suggested Setsuko shhould be an actress.
- Setsuko’s family was struggling financially, therefore she left high school in orde to support her family and work as an actress with the help of Hisatora Kumagai.
- In 1949, 14 years after her debute as an actress, Setsuko has received the Best Actress award from the Mainichi Film Awards, which was the first award she had ever received for her acting. Setsuko had often been criticized by some media and the public for her poor acting skills, therefore she had strongly believed receiving an acting award would help her reputations.
- While shooting for a movie in 1953, Setsuko’s brother, a member of the movie camera crew, who worked for the movie passed away. Setsuko started going to see doctor on a regular basis, which triggered the rumor of her retiring from acting soon.
